The first element of a business in which we think is money, isn’t it? The money is in both parts of the equation, either to invest it or to earn it. Therefore if we heard something like home-based jobs without investment, it sounds immediately like a paradox. It means to create something worthwhile out of nothing, and that’s not the way in what the things work.
Let’s say now that you have the money to invest in a business. What type of business would you like to invest in? Do you have the knowledge to do it? What are the chances of succeeding? What is the risk of losing your investment?
You have accumulated a certain amount of money in your life through your job, savings, or maybe because you inherited it. In any case, you don’t want to lose it, right?
Some sites like Investopedia say that about 25% of businesses fail during the first year of being created, although 66% do not exceed 10 years. Forbes is perhaps more drastic and says that 80% of entrepreneurs have failed at 18 months. The reasons can be diverse, but the important thing is that there is a significant risk in investing in a business.
Therefore we are going to talk here about the possibility of creating a business without money to invest at least at the beginning, even if you have it.
The following Forbes video shows some examples of home-based activities that can be started with very little investment or virtually none. For all of them, you can create a website as the core of your business.
What are you working for?
First of all, it is vital to make clear what is the reason or reasons why are you working for, whatever your job is. Are you working for money? Or For a better life? Is it the money itself the reason for your happiness? Or what you can achieve with money in terms of quality of life, time with your family, knowledge, passion for a specific personal project, etc.?
A primary motivation could be the pure desire to accumulate money, as Mr. Scrooge did. However, I suppose most of us use it only as a vehicle to get other tangible things like a house or a car or intangibles such as education of the children or a vacation.
The problem is that despite wanting to generate money to dispose of our time freely, we usually do it the other way around and spend our time making money. So, the key to the problem is finding a way to enjoy our time that is limited on Earth.
For that we really work, to find a way to make our life better in every way.
Are you achieving the results you want?
When we are students, or we begin our working life we usually think of a large number of projects that we wish to carry out such as getting a great job that gives us fame and fortune or that allows us to develop our boldest projects. We think maybe to form a home in a dream house and have children with whom we will enjoy vacations in exotic places. Then they will have the education they want because we will have the funds to support them.
However, as time goes by, these plans become stagnant for one of two reasons: because we have not managed to get the money necessary to carry them out or because to have much money we are now too busy to fulfill them.
Do you see yourself in any of these two situations? Or did you get what you set out or are you going to do it?
Wealth or quality of life?
As you know, wealth is, above all, an attitude derived from a mental process and affects all our perceptions and actions. So for a person who loves the beach, wealth would be translated as living near the sea in a tropical climate, perhaps in the Caribbean. In contrast, a person who loves literature wealth would probably mean to be in a public or private library.
When building the inner world, each person glimpses a series of elements that make them happy. It is not only the accumulation of objects or experiences in quantitative terms but the quality of each of those parts. Above all, the quality of life that emerges when such parts come together.
Not everything is about money
First of all, many things can be satisfactorily created in life without the need for money, even a business!
If you are thinking only of what you have to buy or pay to acquire those things, perhaps you are neglecting other equally essential elements. Those can be creativity, imagination, optimization of existing resources, and of course, your intelligence and ability to develop a plan.
What if you could start a company with zero money at all? A type of business to which you could spend at least one hour a day consistently in the tranquility of your home. Only using resources that you already have at hand anywhere in your space: your computer and an internet connection.
What if such business could generate for you in a right way, a passive income which little by little could complement some of your home expenses? Nothing spectacular, just the pantry or some bills.
What if after a while, dedicating to this home activity the same time per day, said passive income will double? Maybe it would be enough now to pay some more bills.
Perhaps now you are more motivated to continue working in that business that requires only the investment of the computer and the internet. One that is already generating a supplementary income in your life. You continue working in your conventional employment because it represents the primary source of income or because you enjoy it a lot. But you keep working at home in your small lucrative project as well.
At some point after a few months, that one or two hours that you devote to your online business generates the same income as your usual job does. You have not risked money, and you are not working exhaustively in a second job. However, you have found a new stream of resources that have provided you with many things.
Upon reaching this situation, a dilemma occurs:
– Continue with the same plan to maintain both incomes?
– Give up work that consumes more time for the same income to enjoy the newly available time? or
– Prove whether the strategy that has generated revenue in a fraction of the usual working time could be optimized?
As you can see, a home-based job is not just a marginal activity in the absence of formal employment. If you find the right training and tools, that job without initial investment can become a thriving business.

One thing that I have learned is that entrepreneurs have to be resourceful. Succeeding is not about how much money you can throw at something, but rather your ability to work with what you have. And it’s great that you talked about the goals and life that you want to achieve from starting a business. I personally think that most entrepreneurs fail because they find out that they don’t love the business lifestyle. It becomes the same thing as a 9-5 job or even worse for some. That’s why it’s important to know about the quality of life you’re going for, your passions, and your true goals and this post does a great job of detailing those aspects.
People start their own businesses for different reasons. I like this post because it requires a lot of in depth thought. One will need to think about why he is working and change the mindset completely if it is not right. I also like that you can give good suggestions. There’s nothing as good as starting up a business at home without having to use bricks at all. I tooown a business like this and I must add that it is very lucrative. This is a good post and I think many more people should see it.
I think you make an excellent point here: it’s not all about money, and I think that’s where people have a problem with starting their own business. If you go into something with the sole aim of making money you’ll almost certainly fail very quickly because it’s really not that easy to make money doing anything new and unless you enjoy what you’re doing and/or it’s bringing some non-material benefit it will become impossible. We all need to feel like what we do has value, whether just to ourselves, or our families, or to wider society and at the end of the day, it’s quality of life that makes for happiness, not the amount of money in your bank account. A really interesting and thought-provoking piece.
Nothing is as awesome as having one’s business and personal space and being totally independent while at it without having to break the bank before getting started with it. I like the fact that most businesses on the internet requires no start up capital and getting started only requires right set of trainings. Thanks so much for suggesting wealthy Affiliate as a platform to learn the rudiments of starting out one’s business. Cheers
Defining the reason for our work would help us to specify the kind of life we want to live. Most times, life is beyond just working for money but getting personal time and enjoying what life has to offer too is essential in selecting what to work on. I like the fact that you pointed out that there is need to constantly revise our progress to juxtapose between our life and our business life. Freedom is also essential. Great article! Thanks so much
Thank you for this insightful post.
Too many times I see people, and I’ve done this myself, worry about the costs of getting started and so they don’t do anything and remain in their 9 to 5 jobs.
I actually place the quality of life above all other aspects in my professional life. A close second is being able to cover all the bills.
I watched the video and have to say, the mobile paper shredding and pet taxi services are super simple and low-cost.
Thank you again,
Scott
Hello Tommy,
After reading all your interesting article and after having worked in the real world and currently in the virtual one, they are very different experiences.
Of course you can earn money on both, but I consider the real with higher expenses, investments and risk.
For this reason in recent years I said goodbye to the real and increasingly dedicate more time and effort in the virtual. I also think like you that money is not the main thing, that does help and a lot!
