Niches and microniches

One way in which many marketers especially those that offer products to make money online, attract new customers is using the formula:

One irresistible product to all people + global exposure through internet = instant fortune in one night

What these marketers never make clear is that rarely there is such as a compelling product for all people and that global online exposure is not achieved by simply appear in the listings of major search engines.
Unfortunately this is something that many newbie learn by experience when, after days, weeks or months of searching for a single sale does not succeed simply because no one is watching them on internet, or nobody cares what they sell or both.

I think one way to modify this perspective is to reverse the formula:

One very specific product for some specific people + selective exposure through internet = profitable micro-niche

The micro-niche concept has been neglected by many people precisely because it opposes the idea of making money by selling in volume, and also because it takes work and this is to know deeply our market in order to draw much defined features that generate confidence in the long-term consumer.

One example that I like to think is in the dairy industry. A few decades ago all we could choose was the brand of milk we consumed. Then came the skim milk, the Lactose-free and light. Now the variety of milk is so impressive that a family of 4 or 6 members can go to the supermarket and leave each with its complement of milk each different from the other member. Dad can eat low fat milk and lactose-free for people over 40 years. Mom buys the light lactose-free milk to supplement her diet low in calories. The eldest son who plays football, he prefers whole milk because that is what provides all the nutrients needed to wear. The teenager daughter drink milk light strawberry flavor to keep her figure and because the flavor is cool. Young children will choose little cartons of chocolate and vanilla flavor to watch TV and so on.

If you look carefully micro-niches can add as much or more people than when you create one campaign for a wonderful product, with the added advantage that we can create loyal customers in each of these niches.

In internet marketing, including products that are designed to make money, they must be targeted to specific population groups with defined characteristics. Many marketers believe the dogma that everyone wants to make money and will by any means, whether cheating or selling junk, but a careful market analysis will highlight that while it is true that many people want to earn more money, the reasons to win are different in each case, as are different behaviors that will be taken to do so. Here are some ideas:

  1. Groups over 40 years: In this group we find many people who make money, some of them enough to have a quality life but what interests them is to have more time to devote to family or dreams deferred or perhaps because they are interested in changing a job that appeals to them.
  2. Housewives: Here we find women sometimes facing greater difficulties in entering the job market especially with a certain level of preparation. Then there are those women who have had to relegate their own aspirations to win money due to time or money issues or family care depending on the income of another provider which is usually the couple.
  3. Graduate students: This is a group of highly skilled people but have difficulty meeting time for their studies and a source of income at the same time. Often face the dilemma of choosing one thing or another, having to choose, in many cases the source of income to survive.
  4. Disabled people: Our world in general is not a very friendly place for people with disabilities. There are many companies that have the attitude of creating jobs for this sector of the population, and some who have it do not have adequate infrastructure to carry it out. Many disabled people have to settle for informal activities or help from other people instead to fend for themselves with a regular income.

Of course these are just some examples, as may be included here those unemployed due to economic crisis, climate, health; also it should be included those who want to expand their business prospects, people who travel a lot, those who wish activity for their retirement, those who have a job or a business with seasonal ups and downs, those who have to work for long periods away from home, etc.

Each person in the world thinks, acts, dreams of a particular form and language that is used to target individuals must change in light of these characteristics. In this time where there is economic crisis, natural disasters and now a radical change in conventional approaches to internet marketing, you need to adjust your paradigms and change your business model for something much more diverse, flexible and having the potential to keep in the long term such as micro-niches.
