First great goal: your first sale online

When someone decides to start an online business is usually due to one of the following reasons:
1. An emergency situation where you need extra money soon

2. The need to increase your current income because now is quite insufficient

3. The idea of changing your current jobs to one where you do not have to move from your home, nor have boss

4. The idea of getting rich in a quick and easy way

First, the idea that doing business online is a quick and easy way to make money is a subjective concept. If by “easy ” you understand without the slightest effort but just press a few buttons, is a complete mistake. Internet marketing requires a basic knowledge very simple, but you have to understand, use and refine in order to begin to get results.

On the other hand if by “rapid” you understand getting rich the overnight or the next week then you can also have serious disappointments. Internet marketing can be and  really is a quick way to earn money when compared with a typical job from 9 to 5 in which you work 20 or 30 years to retire. In internet marketing you may be getting the same average income of a conventional job after a period of several months, then there is no limit to increase the revenue. It all depends on the goals that you set up.

The goals are just part of the engine of this business, and are what makes us stand firm even if sometimes the results are not what one expects. If you have a clear goal and set a date to achieve, then develop a plan to carry out and adjust the plan as you approach your term. If your plan goes well, keep doing what you do or do your best!, if your plan goes wrong then edit and re-evaluate it. There are no tricks in it.

But a key point here is that your goal is achievable, that is something that you believe you’re going to get because if it is too ambitious may happen that neither you get convinced that it is possible and therefore do not put the effort because you’ll have the idea that every effort would be futile. When you start on internet marketing, messages about winning thousands of dollars in a very short time are overwhelming, but eventually convincing many people (at least in appearance) that are achievable from one moment to another, all in a single payment. At the end the new marketer is convinced that his goal is to win thousands (or even millions of dollars) in a ridiculously short time and without any effort.

Without entering into polemics I think the best way to build this business (and the best way to develop any other major human work) is through a conscious, intelligent, progressive and quantifiable effort. That said I think the first big goal you must set to get started in online business is to make your first sale online. Not a million sales, not a million dollars. Begin with one step at a time, will be believeble to you and you’ll feel a great satisfaction that will motivate you to continue striving for subsequent sales.
Remember the words attributed to Lao Tse “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”

To succeed in making money online is not easy and there is no such thing as fas-money-scheme.

I do agree with you that making money online via the internet is great but it requires a significant amount of time and effort. For instance, I have been blogging for more than a year now. Only recently I started to see the climb in traffic. It takes a long time to get my website to take off. Just like anyone says, an airplane needs to go against the wind in order to take off. You need to work extremely hard against all the obstacles in order to make things works.

It is really important to set realistic goals. Inch by inch, play by play. This is how we achieve our goals. Thanks for sharing this post! It is definitely an inspiring article!

I appreciate your point of view and working online, at first, seems to be the easy option to leave your 9-5 daily work, but it is not so easy as it seems, not at least at the beginning, Thanks!

    Hi Tommy
I think when you get your first sale it demonstrates you could get 10 or even 100 sales plus. I have heard the term “rinse and repeat” many times. It does take effort and their is no get rich quick like many look for. It doesnt exist. Put in the hard yards and you will get more than one sale. I like the fact online business is truly uncapped. Good article!
    Cheers Sharon

Very good analogy Sharon, exactly this game is a first and ten at a time and often only a few yards. From time to time a long pass or a touchdown. It takes a lot of effort, concentration, discipline, planning, but it definitely has no limits.

      Thanks,

      Tommy

Hi Tommy, great assessment of what it takes to be successful online. For longevity, you can never have true success with any get rich scheme. I personally am still waiting for my first sale, but I do my best to put a new article out at least once every two days. One thing I know I have going for me is that I can visualize what my life would look like as a successful affiliate marketer, and I never let go of that image.

    • Tommy Potter says:

Hi Jacob, thanks for your comments. I agree, the most important thing for a marketer to succeed should be the vision of you having right now what you wish to accomplish because it set up an unconscious state of mind leading you to do efortlessly what it takes to get your goals day after day.

Hi! It’s so important to set up small goals that can be accomplished in short periods of time so they boost our confidence to continue working for those super big goals. Most of the time we want to fly before learning how to walk. So, before we earn 5 figures monthly online, we must start with our first sale! Thank you very much for helping me put things into perspective!

      Hello Henry,

Perhaps one of the main things we have to learn to master when we start building our online business is anxiety. That feeling of wanting to obtain a fortune overnight just by having published a post, accelerates all our expectations and when it does not happen it disappoints us. However, as you say one goal at a time, attainable gives us enough encouragement to go for more. And at least we realize we will have created a solid business.

It’s absolutely great that you started your article by stressing out the misconception when it comes to making money online ==>that all it takes is just a few clicks.

Quite misleading, and tons of programs online have used these tactics to make millions of dollars already. The only thing the unsuspecting user wants is to make quick cash, and they end up losing the little they have.

Yes indeed. Gaols help us to stay focused when it gets very rocky, and it absolutely will sooner or later so long as you decide to set up an online business.

Your article has very important facts for those who really need to set the right expectations when getting started. You did a wonderful job because I enjoyed reading.

      Hi Nsoh,

It is amazing that scams continue to work year after year, scamming people with genuine desires to start an online business. That is why it is so essential that people who have experience and who have created their business based on ethics are educators of those who are just beginning. Wealthy Affiliate is an example of such values; that is why it remains the industry leader.

The first sale was everything no matter how much it is. I still remember it till today. It is good for us to set goals both short term and long term. I usually write them down at the end of the night to remind myself what I need to do to reach my goal. I always feel good about myself when I cross out my todo list that will help me get to my goal. We have to believe in ourselves and do what we need to do one step at a time.

I also found out about myself that I am my worst enemy. I usually take a break when things get too overwhelmed. But also put a timer or a reminder to remind me to get back to my task. Also listening to all the motivation coaches on youtube help as well.

Hopefully reach my goal, working from home full time, soon.

    Cheers!

    • Tommy Potter says:

      Hi Nuttanee,

Right! The first sale represents a real quantum leap. Nobody gets rich with it. However, it is reliable proof not only that online businesses work but “our business” works. It is the only evidence essential to believe and from there grow with constant work.

What I do to avoid procrastination is to use the Pomodoro Technique, and it has been advantageous, although not all people like it.

To progress, we need to know our strengths and weaknesses, and it seems to me that you know yours well, so you will surely succeed.
